by David Stratton | The Nevada Gaming Commission on Thursday approved the licensing of the new M Resort hotel and casino in south Las Vegas, along with the casino’s race and sports operator, Cantor Gaming.

The Commission also approved the buy-out of Cannery Casino Resorts by Australia-based Crown Ltd.

The $1 billion M Resort, which is expected to open March 1, is located at Las Vegas Blvd. and St. Rose Parkway, about five miles south of Michael Gaughan’s South Point hotel/casino.

M Resort features 390 guest rooms, a 92,000-square-foot casino, nine restaurants, and a movie theater complex to be added later this year.

Making its first foray into the sports book business is Cantor Gaming, which also was approved to provide wireless gaming for the resort.

A division of Cantor Fitzgerald, Cantor Gaming last year received Nevada approval for a mobile gaming network after a field trial at the Venetian hotel/casino in Las Vegas.
