One thing that’s clear is the winner of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will have to race 27 more miles than any previous champion. You see, this year Shelby Automobiles is sponsoring the race and making the distance match its "Las Vegas Motor Speedway Limited Edition Shelby 427" for the Ford Shelby GT500. Since its inception in 1998, the race has been 400.5 miles or 267 laps on the 1.5-mile oval. With the new name, the race now goes 285 laps.

"We’re thrilled to have our name on the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Shelby 427," company owner Carroll Shelby said. "From drag racing to Formula 1, I’ve been involved in just about every type of motor racing except NASCAR. I love the competition, passion and excitement of the fans and teams in this sport."

That said, what hasn’t changed is Jimmie Johnson not in the favorite’s role. Only this week he has company. In odds released Monday night at the Las Vegas Hilton, Johnson and Carl Edwards opened as 5-1 co-favorites. Both Johnson and Edwards posted Top 10 finishes last week at California, but neither has really been a big factor heading to Race 3 of the NASCAR schedule.

Part of the Busch Las Vegas connection is second choice at 6-1. Kyle Busch has been a dominant driver, despite falling short at Daytona and California. Busch led the most laps at Daytona and won both the Truck Series and Nationwide races at California. His brother Kurt, the pride of PT’s Taverns in Las Vegas, is at 20-1.

Matt Kenseth, 2-for-2 this season for Roush Racing with wins at Daytona and California, shares the third top choice at 7-1 with Greg Biffle and Jeff Gordon – last week’s runnerup at California. Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jamie McMurray and Mark Martin are each 18-1, while Denny Hamlin and Brian Vickers are 20-1. Tony Stewart, in his first appearance in Las Vegas as a car owner, is 25-1.

The Hilton lists 20 drivers between 30-1 and 100-1 including AJ Allmendinger, who at 100-1 this week did finish third in the Daytona 500. Props and individual driver matchups will be released at sports books across Las Vegas later today.
