BETTING UP FOR VEGAS NASCAR RACES

Las Vegas books reported higher betting for this year’s NASCAR races than was expected. "The betting was solid and a bit more than we had anticipated," said Jay Kornegay, director of race and sports operations at the Las Vegas Hilton. "Every year NASCAR betting gets more and more popular here. The Vegas race is definitely the biggest wagered by far."

Lucky’s books at the Plaza and Terrible’s reported brisk betting in the two hours prior to Sunday’s race with large crowds watching it. – Mark Mayer.

HEAVYWEIGHT CARD SET AT ORLEANS

The Orleans fight card this Friday (7 p.m. at Mardi Gras Ballroom)could be one of Crown Boxing promoter Frank Luca’s best in years. The heavyweight main event, which will have betting, pits 6-foot-5, 245-lb. Nicolai Firtha vs Vili "The Tongan Warrior" Bloomfield. Both are past medal winners on the USA National team. Firtha is rated a 6-5 favorite. The 7-bout card will also feature Elijah McCall, son of former WBC world heavyweight champ Oliver McCall.
