SANTA ANITA

ATTA’GIRL: First-time starter broke right on top from post position 10, but Espinoza took hold and dropped her back. He came four wide, dropped to the inside and still had a ton of horse. Espinoza had to check off heels and she lost her shot in what was a very poor ride. Look for a new jock next time. Just go to the window and bet. $$$$$

COLD RULER: Was even money on this carryover day, but just never ran a step with Gomez up. Look for him to rebound in a big way next time out.

CHARLIE AND CHRIS: Second-time starter looked great in this spot off his last race. Could not get to the front and got run down by a very live first-time starter. Next time.

PACIFIC HALO: It just amazes me how these odds-on horses just never win on a big carryover day. Halo looked good, but had a ton of trouble and finished a very disappointing fourth. It was his first result out of the money. In previous matchup, he defeated the horse that beat him by some 15 lengths.

MISS CHERRY: Broke slow and was between horses. She got in tight and jock had to take hold. Got going and made a five-wide run in the stretch. After reaching the front, she was run down late to miss by a nostril. $$$

MOSCOW RISING: Pulled between horses, was in tight and checked off heels nearing the first turn. She continued to pull her rider on the backstretch in trying to get loose. Was then taken out for her run, but it was too late.

WELKEN: Made a nice late run despite trouble and looks ready for a trip to the winner’s circle. All she needs is some pace to run at.

MAD FOR PLAID: Just ran huge at 27-1 when showing improved speed. She could pop next time out at what will be a good price.

RARE NUGGET: It is hard enough to win a race getting mugged in midstretch and the goofy stewards don’t make a change. This girl was best, but got punished by the stewards’ stupidity when they said the contact was not enough for a DQ. Well, the winner came out and knocked her three paths out only to see her come back to lose by a head! Come on!

GOLDEN GATE FIELDS

JOHNNY THE WATCH: Was running with the speed early on, but took back to last and looked broken down. He came off the rail and rallied while in traffic into the stretch. Once clear, he stormed home for the win. $$$$$

LOVE THE GRANDKIDS: Was very unlucky to lose when shipping in for Santa Anita. He now goes to the Miyadi barn off the claim and will be single material next time out.

HURRICANE DEPUTY: Was listed at 20-1 on the morning line, but took a ton of early action. His odds did drift back up to 16-1 and Deputy came running late to just miss by less than a length. He was gaining with every stride, but could not run down the odds on Baze winner.
