Tampa Bay -120 vs Baltimore (10½)
The visiting Devil Rays come into Baltimore after taking two of three at Boston. Righthander Andy Sonnanstine is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA lifetime at Camden Yards and a surprisingly low favorite against 6-foot-9 Mark Hendrickson. The journeyman lefty may best be remembered for his stint with the Dodgers. Hendrickson was penciled in by the Orioles as a spot starter, but he gets the early nod with injuries in the rotation.
The Orioles also began the season 2-1 after winning the first two games of their series at home with the Yankees. Outfielder Nick Markakis is the hottest Baltimore hitter, going 5-for-10 with a homer. For Tampa Bay, Akinori Iwamura is off to a good start following the World Baseball Classic for Japan, going 5-for-10 against the Red Sox. All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria was 6-for-14, including a pair of homers.
Tampa acquired Pat Burrell from the Phillies for just this situation – a big righty bat to counter a tall lefthander. Sonnanstine will give you innings, something that can’t be guaranteed with Hendrickson. TAMPA BAY.
