Old is new again -- hat-wise at Kentucky Derby

Industry Insider by Ray Poirier | Further signs that purses are tightening will be on display Saturday at Churchill Downs when "old hats" will be new again for this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Women planning to attend this year’s event have been crowding downtown Louisville stores seeking feathers, flowers, plumes or anything that will help them retrofit a suitable hat for the Derby.

"Who’s going to know?" asked a salesman at one of the stores. "I think that’s probably a secret kept with the ladies," he added.

One customer bought a used hat at a second-hand store and picked up some fuchsia feathers to dress it up.

"I was definitely bargain hunting," she explained. "Now if only I can pick the race winner."
