NHL playoffs (Game 1)
4:05 p.m. PT at Detroit
Red Wings -235 vs Ducks (5½)
When the Ducks won the Stanley Cup a couple of years ago, on the way they knocked off Detroit behind a red hot goalie J.S. Giguere. Well now Giguere finds himself backing up the newest Anaheim wunderkind, Jonas Hiller. It was Hiller was played all six games in the San Jose series, winning four and producing two shutouts. The Wings were taking it all in after an easy 4-0 series victory over Columbus.
Not only is Detroit rested, but confident. The Wings won all three regular season meetings with the Ducks, including two at Joe Louis Arena. Giguere was the starting goalie in those three matchups. Right now, it’s Hiller’s world and the rookie has injected confidence in the Ducks. Anaheim as the No. 8 seed in the West knocked off the top-seeded Sharks so Detroit now becomes the team to beat. If Hiller can fight off the expected Game 1 jitters, the Ducks could make this another low scoring affair. UNDER.
