by GT Staff | If you thought the Kentucky Derby was turned upside down with the morning scratch of morning line favorite I Want Revenge, that was nothing compared to the actual race.

Mine That Bird, taking advantage of a sloppy track, exploded from the rail down the stretch to win the Derby by a whopping 6 ¾ lengths at odds of 50-1. Jockey Calvin Burel pulled Mine That Bird with a dramatic move to the rail and and gained the victory ahead of Pioneerof The Nile and Musket Man. Papa Clem finished fourth.

Earlier in the day, I Want Revenge was scratched after a filling was discovered in an ankle on the day of the race. It is the first time in Derby history that the morning-line favorite was scratched the day of the race.

The soft tissue injury to the left front ankle was discovered this morning by trainer Jeff Mullins. Dr. Foster Northrup watched as I Want Revenge jogged on the blacktop, and "he jogged fine," the equine practitioner said at a press conference. But, "the inflammation was there."

The M Resort, which had I Want Revenge as part of its in-race wagering, switched to Friesan Fire vs the field. Friesan Fire was +425 to beat the field. The field, which won, was -550. Friesan Fire was grouped with Dunkirk and Pioneerof The Nile vs field. The line was -110 each way, with the field again winning.
