Las Vegas keeping Science sweet

Those who think horse racing interest is dying out are apparently avoiding Palace Station or any other race book in Las Vegas.

"You can’t get any better than a sellout crowd coming for knowledge and free pizza," said Zack Goldberg, one of the young phenoms in the race and sports industry. "Having three knowledgeable people giving great information on the Kentucky Derby isn’t too bad."

And neither is pizza – pepperoni at that! The pizza sighting became the consensus pick everyone was looking for.

"The comps are great here," said Wayne Wilkins, who spent three days here from Southern California to take in the hospitality and the opinions of GamingToday’s Richard Saber, Palace Station’s Vic Vivio and Race Day Las Vegas radio host Ralph Siraco.

"I agreed with what they said about throwing out the longshots," Wilkins said. "I go to Palace Station, Sunset and Boulder. The people here are real nice and put on a good show. Lots of comps."

Wilkins came to Las Vegas for the $20,000 pot in the Twin Q’s.

"I didn’t know about it until last year," he said. "I used to come here once a month. Now it’s about four times a year, mostly going to Del Mar and Santa Anita. I live in San Bernardino, where an OTB office is just a few miles from me. I love it."

Matt Battle came into town from Phoenix for the Derby, but has a house near Palace Station.

"When I come to the seminars, I look for stuff that makes sense," Battle said. "I listen to Ralph’s radio show every day. I was interested to hear all the speakers talk about breeding and the 1¼ mile distance. I work in Vegas about 20 days a month and love horse racing."

Boyden Ralph lives in Vegas and a loyal reader of GamingToday. Since he brought it up, I’m not ashamed to throw in the plug for the cause.

"The seminar here is excellent," Ralph said. "Palace Station’s the only reason I come. They have special events."

Also, kudos again to GT’s Sid Diamond for a big +250 winner Saturday with the Angels over the Yankees and CC Sabathia.

And now for my baseball:

Wednesday’s best

Rays at Yanks: Again, the two Andys. Sonnanstine has a 6.75 ERA this season. Pettitte is 15-4 lifetime against Tampa Bay. YANKEES.

Indians at Red Sox: Carl Pavano may be pitching for the Tribe, but he’s a Yankee to Red Sox Nation. And he brings a 24.75 ERA in starts at Fenway Park. Meanwhile young Justin Masterson is 7-0 at the Fens.RED SOX -1½.

Brewers at Reds: Manny Parra is 0-4 so far for the Brewers. Bronson Arroyo is 4-1 for the Reds and they score for him. REDS.
