THIS WEEK’S PROJECTIONS

PITTSBURGH: Yeah, it’s only May but the Pirates started the week 7½ out in the NL Central and losers of 8 straight. Here’s a chance to right the Pirate ship with 6 home games – 3 with St. Louis and 3 with struggling Colorado. The Pirates split 4 at St. Louis to open the season with 3 going OVER the total.

Bucs are 7-7 at PNC and need to go at least 4-2.

LA ANGELS: We still prefer Anaheim. The fact the Halos are 16-14 with half the team hurt and many gone through free agency is testimony to how good manager Mike Scioscia (pictured) is. John Lackey is throwing in the minors and Vlad Guerrero is mending. Meanwhile the Boston Red Sox come to town to start the week and then it’s a weekend series at first place Texas. A good barometer for how far Anaheim truly is to being firmly back as the AL West favorite.

Angels should have favorable prices so we’ll take 3-3. – Mark Mayer
