Dontrelle Semi-Hot; Lidge Not
EYE OF THE TIGER: At age 21, Dontrelle Willis went 14-6 for the Florida Marlins. Two years later in 2005 he won 22 games. Traded to Detroit Tigers last year, he pitched just 24 innings and looked to be finished. But since coming back from the disabled list, the lefty looks like a new man. The stats are not huge (1-1, 3.57 ERA), but Willis is shedding that "bet-against" label.
CLOSER ROLE OPEN? Well, it would have been madness to think that in April when Phillies closer Brad Lidge (pictured) was coming off a perfect 48-for-48 in save chances last year and getting the final out in the World Series. But now come whispers, including those of GT’s Philly fanatic Ed Golden, that Ryan Madson take over the closer role. Lidge is 0-2 with a 9.15 ERA, but the big worry is blown saves. Lidge already has 4, including two straight miscues last weekend vs the Yanks. Lidge went through the abyss with Houston when he seemed done. So who knows?
