YOUTH IS SERVED: Quietly Oakland is putting together a scary pitching staff. Vin Mazzaro (23), hasn’t given up a run in his two starts. The other parts of the rotation are Donnie Braden (25), Trevor Cahill (21), Brett Anderson (21) and Josh Outman (24). The A’s have won 6 in a row, not bad for a team that doesn’t hit much. Oakland was +$600 last week and faces a Twins team that’s bad on the road.
WRONG DIVISION? Maybe the Pittsburgh Pirates should petition for a switch from the NL Central to the East. Pittsburgh is 11-5 against the Mets, Braves, Marlins and Nationals, including a current 6-1 streak. Keep that in mind this week as the Pirates began a 4-game series at Atlanta on Monday. And Pittsburgh could well be a underdog in every game.
ROCKIE ROAD! It was tough sledding at home for St. Louis, which dropped 3 straight as a heavy favorite to Colorado. Maybe the Rockies are becoming the NL version of the Oakland A’s! – Mark Mayer
