WEDNESDAY AL PICKS: Indians, Red Sox

ROYALS at INDIANS: Scheduled starters: Gil Meche (Royals), Carl Pavano (Indians)(pictured). No more do we laugh hearing the words Carl Pavano. Now healthy, Pavano is 6-4 with the Tribe and coming off a shutout victory over the White Sox. Even though Gil Meche has pitched well of late, KC has hit the skids and Cleveland is winning with Pavano. CLEVELAND.

YANKS at RED SOX: Scheduled starters: ChienMing Wang (Yankees), Tim Wakefield (Red Sox). Last time the Yanks were at Fenway Park, they wanted no part of pitching Wang. But he’s healthier and pitching better than a month ago. Still Wang is 0-3 with that 14.46 ERA! Wakefield has been rock steady at 7-3 for a Red Sox starting staff that is now on a roll with Josh Beckett and Jon Lester in a groove. Mark Teixeira is on a home run tear for the Yanks, but so is Jason Bay with Boston. And we favor Papelpon over Rivera right now in the 9th. BOSTON.

WEDNESDAY NL PICKS: Phillies, Cubs

PHILS at METS: Scheduled starters: Cole Hamels (Phillies), Mike Pelfrey (Mets). The Phils have been great for 8 innings on the road and with Hamels on a roll we may not see Brad Lidge in the ninth. At least we hope not. Mike Pelfrey has beaten the Phils twice this season, but a third time will be a tall order especially off a very bad outing against Pittsburgh. PHILADELPHIA.

CUBS at ASTROS: Scheduled starters: Carlos Zambrano (Cubs)(pictured), Wandy Rodriguez (Astros). It’s normally a good idea to take Wandy at home, but not when he is 0-3 in his last 3 starts and allowing 19 runs in his last 26 innings. Meanwhile, we correctly thought Zambrano would come back strong after serving that 6-game suspension. Add that fact to Carlos having beaten Houston easily on Opening Day and we’re again ready to put money on Z. CUBS.

Mark Mayer’s Wednesday record: 12-14. Last week: 3-1.
