Try downtown for good poker, even better food

Carol, do you remember the poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner?

I am reminded of some of the words of that old poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge!

Water, water, everywhere,

And all the boards did shrink;

Water, water, everywhere,

Nor any drop to drink!

Because of the World Series of Poker being in town:

Poker, poker everywhere,

With a poker player in every seat;

Poker, poker everywhere,

With a lot of the poker players who have ran out of luck,

Looking for a head-shrink!

Yes, there is poker to the left of us and poker to the right of us here in Las Vegas, the "poker capital of the world."

With thousands of poker players in town, the players have scattered out from the Rio to a lot of the other poker rooms here in Las Vegas.

As I had predicted, there were over 2,500 senior poker players in town to play in "The Seniors" at the WSOP tournament on June 22. I created "The Seniors" poker tournament for Binion’s WSOP way back in 2001 when the World Series of Poker was still being played downtown.

Harrah’s bought the World Series of Poker from Binion’s, but they did not buy my brand, "The Seniors" World Championship of Poker. Nor did Harrah’s buy another of my brands, "The Seniors" WCOP/Poker Players Hall of Fame.

I have been playing a lot of poker in beautiful downtown Las Vegas at Binion’s and across the street at the Golden Nugget. I am kind of like the old preacher or politician – I go play poker where the food is good and the folks are friendly!

I have really been lucky downtown at Binion’s the past couple of weeks – and in Oklahoma we have several sayings; here is one of them:

"If it is true it is not bragging."

I have finished in the money at the third annual Poker Classic at Binion’s six times. Then I drifted across the street to the Grand Poker Series at the Golden Nugget last Saturday to play in "The Seniors" at the Grand Poker Series.

Since I created "The Seniors" WCOP, the event is played now in over 30 of the major poker tournaments of the world.

I have hosted "The Seniors" WCOP event in a lot of different casinos and cruise ships, including The Aviation Club on the Champs Elysee in Paris, France. If you would like a list, email me at [email protected].

I was treated really nice by the Golden Nugget, and they welcomed me to say a few words and give the instruction, "Shuffle up and deal," in their "The Seniors" no limit poker tournament.

If you haven’t guessed it by now, yes, I did get to the final table of "The Seniors" at The Grand Poker Series at the Nugget. And, yes, I did have over a quarter of a million in chips when the other players wanted to split the prize pool.

Yes, this time I wanted to win it, but I settled with "The Seniors" poker players by chip count and I took third place money.

It’s not like the payouts at the WSOP, but I will be able to buy gas for both Carol and "Oklahoma Sarah" for a while.

Come on downtown and see how nice it is, how friendly they are and how good the food is!

And, like I said before, I always go where the food is good, the people are glad to see me, and where they treat you really nice.

Poker Tip of the Week

I will give you a couple of secrets today.

No one ever wins a poker tournament by backing up.

You cannot back your way into a championship; you have to attack!

As my daughter OK-Sarah says, "Poker is like war; there is no tomorrow. You have to pick the hill you want to defend and die trying, or be king of the hill!"

You cannot win every poker hand, but pick the hand you must win to be the champion and win that hand or lose all your chips trying to win!

Remember, until next time, Stay Lucky!
