AUSTRALIA CLOSE TO ONLINE BETTING BAN

Jun 25, 2001 7:43 PM

Australia's Parliament is expected to approve a ban on Internet casino gambling by Australian citizens.

The legislation will force Internet service providers to filter out sites if they are based in Australia.

The lawmakers are expected to exempt horse racing, sports betting and lotteries from the prohibition, which also were forbidden under the original bill introduced in March.

The government decided to move against online betting following a report last year that Australia had nearly 300,000 problem gamblers out of a population of 19 million.

Online providers oppose the ban.
