As expected, the Australian government has enacted a ban on online casinos offering their games to Australian residents or taking bets from foreign jurisdictions where Internet betting is illegal.

In passing the legislation, the Senate modified the original proposal for a blanket ban on all wagering, amending it to exclude sports betting and a lottery.

Overseas bookmakers will be forbidden to offer their wares to Australians.

Online operators opposed the ban. One of the most powerful is media magnate Kerry Packer, a major player in the country's casino industry and a high-stakes wagerer himself.
