NFL football:

Tennessee Titans at Pittsburgh Steelers –6: The Steelers kick off the 2009 season with a defense of their NFL title won last year, when they defeated the Cardinals in the Super Bowl, 27-23. Over the past decade, history has been kind to the Super Bowl winner in their first game of the new season: the champs have won nine straight season openers, while compiling a solid 7-2 ATS record against the point spread. This match-up appears to be a low scoring, defensive struggle with both teams capable of playing solid defense. However, Pittsburgh appears to have more weapons at their disposal, starting with a better quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh -6.

College football:

Clemson at Georgia Tech -5 ½: This series has been very nearly even over the years, with 10 of the last 13 match-ups decided by 5 points or less. Moreover, the underdog has won outright in six of the last nine meetings. Most recently, there’s been an edge to the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech has won four of the last five meetings, including three straight at home. In this match-up it appears Georgia Tech has the better ground attack and should move the ball consistently. Plus, Clemson starts a freshman quarterback, which doesn’t bode well playing in enemy territory on a raucous Thursday night. Remember last year, the only ACC Thursday night game saw Georgia Tech thrash Miami, 41-23. Georgia Tech -5 ½
