The Australian government, as expected, has enacted a ban on online casinos offering their games to residents or taking bets from foreign jurisdictions where Internet wagering is illegal.
The Senate modified the original proposal for a blanket ban on all wagering, amending their decision to exclude sports betting and a lottery.
Online operators, including media magnate Kerry Packer, opposed the ban. Packer is a major player in the country’s casino industry and a high-stakes bettor.
Overseas bookmakers will be forbidden to offer their wares to Australia.
