After watching many football games this past weekend I have come to the conclusion that they should just play these games with someone minding the clock and NO, I repeat NO zebras on the field. We can’t have big, close games decided by bad calls and not by the play on the field.
In the Florida/LSU game at the end of the first half, the Florida receiver yanked the jersey of the LSU player, pulled him aside and caught a TD pass, which happened right in front of the ref, who just kind of shrugged it off.
In the NFL, the Cowboys and Chiefs were tied and KC was driving, when a pass to the wide receiver who, would have caught it on the Cowboys’ 40, was broken up as the Cowboy defender mugged the receiver in the worst way, holding him with his left hand and pulling him with his right before the ball even got there; but the ref just looked the other way.
Now that my venting is over I will tell you the Steubenville Big Red won their 67th straight regular season game in front of 12,000 strong, beating Massillon 13-3 in what was one of the best games ever played at the ole Harding Stadium, which is now Reno Saccoccia Stadium. I want to thank my favorite aunt, Rose Lamantia, and my good friends, Bill and Tom Wilson, who updated us with the play by play.
This year’s Breeders’ Cup is right around the corner so mark this date: Nov. 5, and this time: 6 p.m., on your calendar as yours truly will be hosting a Breeders’ Cup Seminar at Palace Station along with the all knowledgeable Ralph Siraco and Palace Station’s own Vic Vivio, who knows a thing or two about horse racing as he gave me a winner on Saturday.
If you have ever been to one of our seminars you know how much fun and insight you can get and you may end up with a winner or two. There will be the usual free cocktail service and Zack may toss in some free food; he gets no respect.
Let’s get to some selections and hopefully some winners for the upcoming week in college and the NFL games.
Oklahoma +3 at Texas (Dallas): This game should be in prime time so maybe there will be a time change so beware. Sooners got into a slug fest last year losing 45-35 as a seven point favorite, that won’t happen this time around as they have one of the best defense’s in the country. They got their Heisman QB Sam Bradford back last week and with that game under his belt look for his best against the Longhorns as he gets revenge from last year’s loss. OKLA. +3
Ohio State -13½ at Purdue: I guess we have to bet early as there are some good betting games in the morning. We will stick with the Buckeyes and their stingy defense as they now have covered five straight games. OHIO STATE -13½
Virginia -4 at Maryland: Note there is a time change on this game as it was scheduled for 9 a.m. The Cavaliers have come to life just as they did this time last year. That last win against Indiana was just super. VIRGINIA -4
Georgia -7 at Vanderbilt: Both teams have fallen on some hard times but the Commodores offense has gone south for the winter, the Bulldogs in desperate need of a win so look for their defense to come and play. GEORGIA -7
Wyoming +10½ at Air Force: The "Cow Pokes" from Wyoming have won and covered three straight and look to break a three game skid at the hands of the fly boys, look for a big effort. WYOMING +10½
Virginia Tech -3 at Georgia Tech: This looks like one of the best bests of the week as the Hokies offense is operating on all cylinders as they have averaged over 37 points in their last three wins. They are on a serious mission and catch the Yellow Jackets off a big win against Florida State. Dig deep and lay the field goal. VIRGINAI TECH -3
Hawaii +11 at Idaho: Must stick with the Vandals as they have gone 5-1 SU and 6-0 ATS so far this year, the only problem is that all six covers came as dogs, we will take a small shot. IDAHO -11
Washington +3½ at Arizona State: The Huskies look to pull off the Arizona sweep this year as they beat Zona last week and now will try and take it to State. There is no total on this game this early but there will be and the play is under as the Sun Devils have played under in all four of their lined games this year. WASHINGTON +3½ AND UNDER THE TOTAL
Browns +13½ at Steelers: Cleveland defense played great last week and will be able to keep this one close playing their arch rivals. BROWNS
Eagles -13 at Raiders: I don’t think I have ever bet a team laying two touchdowns on the road in the NFL, so this will be a first as I can find no reason to bet on the Raiders. EAGLES -13
Titans +9½ at Patriots: I will lay the -9½ with the Pats for the same reason that I will be betting on the Eagles, I can find no sound reason to bet on the Titans who are just a bad team. I will spend the rest of my time in the NFL just betting against teams instead of on teams. PATRIOTS
