College football:

East Carolina -4 at Memphis (Total 48): East Carolina hopes the 49 points it scored against Rice gets its offense on track. It was the first game they scored more than 21 against a Division 1A (FBS) team. The Pirates will need the points if they are to defend their Conference USA title. Memphis has been equally hamstrung on offense as they scored more than 16 points only once (35-20 over UTEP) versus FBS competition. In head-to-head action, East Carolina has had the better of it. They’ve won three straight, with an average winning margin of 17 points; they’ve covered the point spread in seven straight games as well as 11 of the last 12. Memphis will play hard at home, where they’ve won three of the last four meetings, and this game will be close for a while. But East Carolina has the more potent offense and should eke out a decent victory. East Carolina -4 with a lean to UNDER 48.
