College football:

North Carolina at Virginia Tech -16½: This is a key ACC conference game, mostly for Virginia Tech, which already has one loss and needs to run the table to have a shot at the league crown. The line might look a bit high, considering the Tar Heels apparent offensive outburst against Florida State last week. However, the Heels will be facing a much stiffer – and motivated – defense than what they got from the Seminoles. Throw out that contest and North Carolina would be in the bottom five FBS teams (out of 120) in total offense. Virginia Tech can’t claim to be an offensive juggernaut, though they have scored over 30 points in four of their seven games. That should be enough against a one-dimensional North Carolina offense that completed just 12 of 25 pass attempts for a paltry 64 yards last week against Georgia Tech. North Carolina -16½

Major League Baseball World Series:

Philadelphia at New York Yanks -200 (Total 9 UNDER): It was no surprise here that Cliff Lee and the Phillies would take Game 1, but it might be a different scenario tonight. Philly sends out Pedro Martinez, who has pitched well in the post season, but might be overmatched against the Yankees’ lineup. Nonetheless, the price is too high (-200) to bet the Yankees, since the Philadelphia bats will probably be alive against A.J. Burnett as well. Thus, perhaps the better play is playing the OVER in this situation. Even though the ball won’t travel as well at night in Yankee Stadium, there are enough power hitters in both lineups to clear the fences with several dingers. Philly/Yanks OVER 9
