Let's look at some college football bowl games

It seems like most teams are going to some kind of a bowl game but I really don’t care anymore as long as I can find a good bet on some of them. One factor that I use to look at a lot was a team going to a minor bowl game that had some high expectations but they were dashed along the way and we will cover some of those games when we get to them.

As my dear departed dad use to tell my mother when she would ask him why he goes to the track every day, he would say I just may be walking around lucky and not even know it. And that is how I will approach the bowl games. I will make some kind of wager on each and every game, it could be a small straight bet, a little teaser, a bigger straight bet, some parlay cards and just hope at the end of the Texas/Alabama game that I have more green backs than I started with.

We will cover three bowl games in this column: the New Mexico Bowl featuring Wyoming who went 6-6 SU but 8-3 ATS playing the high scoring Fresno St. who went 8-4 SU and 7-4 ATS with narrow defeats at Cincinnati and Wisconsin. On the surface this game is a no-brainer, just go to the window and lay the -12½ with Fresno St. as the game will most likely close around -14. I have learned in the past that the ones that look this easy usually aren’t as Fresno is one of those teams with aspirations of a bigger bowl while Wyoming is just tickled pink to be playing in the New Mexico Bowl.

Saturday, Dec. 19

New Mexico Bowl

University Stadium

Albuquerque, NM

Wyoming +12½ total 54½ vs Fresno State 1:30 PM ESPN: I will sit back and wait for this game to edge up to 14 and take the dog; in these early bowl games taking plus the points is usually a good gamble. WYOMING +14

Our next minor bowl game on Saturday is the ST. PETERSBURG BOWL, yep that’s correct and believe me it is a beautiful place. In this game we have Central Florida who went a nice 8-4 SU and a very good 9-3 ATS while Rutgers went 8-4 SU but only 5-5 ATS.

St. Petersburg Bowl

Tropicana Field

St. Petersburg, FL

UCF +3 Total 44½ vs Rutgers 5 PM ESPN: This is the second half of the ESPN double header on Saturday and we will use the same strategy as we did in game one and go with a very underrated Central Florida team that will have a little home field advantage and a team that is very excited to play in this game while Rutgers could still be reeling after losing to West Virginia to close out their season at home. UCF +3

Sunday, Dec. 20

We now head to New Orleans and to the Superdome for the New Orleans Bowl, a game in which I could be sitting on the 50 yard line with my good friend Syl Friedman and he also said bring the entire GT staff R F & B, maybe next time. Middle Tennessee went 9-3 SU and ATS finishing the season with six straight wins and covers. They play Southern Miss who went 8-4 SU but only 5-6 ATS.

New Orleans Bowl

New Orleans, LA

Middle Tennessee St. +3½ total 58 vs Southern Miss 5:15 ESPN: We will get a good start getting a puppy for Christmas as we will go with another very live dog and stick with a team that is jumping for joy just to be on ESPN and prove that they belong. We will bet them flat and make a three team teaser and parlay. MIDDLE TENN +31/2

Chargers -6½ are home playing Cincinnati who must play their second game on the road in a very hostile environment as the Chargers try to extend their December win streak to 16 straight games. CHARGERS
