GREEKTOWN CASINO FAILS TO MEET RESIDENCY GOALS

Jul 16, 2001 8:44 PM

Greektown Casino has failed to meet a requirement that more than half its workers are city residents, while all three of Detroit's gambling halls hired fewer resident construction workers than promised.

As part of their development agreements with the city, the Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity casinos pledged to meet certain goals while hiring construction workers, buying goods and services and staffing their casinos.

The casinos vowed that at least 51 percent of their workers would be Detroit residents, but a city audit complete in June showed that 48 percent of Greektown's 2,503 workers were city residents -- about 75 workers shy of the goal. Both MGM Grand and MotorCity met the target.
