The Biloxi Planning Commission wants to talk with the Mississippi College Board before voting to let the Isle of Capri Casino build a new parking garage on the beach.
Isle officials have said they need the four-story garage to remain competitive with other casinos that have better parking.
The commission listened to debate about the proposed garage last Thursday. The hearing was recessed for two weeks so that information could be gathered from the College Board, which oversees Mississippi’s higher education system.
“To characterize it as anything less than a land grab is a little bit native,” said Rick Sandifer, who lives on a boat at the Point Cadet Marina. Sandifer contends that the Isle wants control of the land to block the possibility of a competing casino on the site.
The Isle of Capri wants to build the parking garage behind the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center on land the city leases from the College Board. The marine center wants to expand on that land.
Those opposing the garage included staff and volunteers from the marine center and boaters who use the marina.
