Battle of Florida looms

Aug 7, 2001 4:16 AM

First full week of pre-season games gets underway Friday August 12 at Jacksonville where the Jaguars host Carolina Panthers. Other games on that date are Cincinnati Bengals at Detroit Lions and NY Giants visit New England to play the Patriots. Most intriguing match up of the week takes place in Tampa where the Buccaneers host the Miami Dolphins on National Television, on Monday night.

Games for August 10th through August 13.

Jacksonville Jaguars 23 Carolina Panthers 13: Jaguars go into this game on a high (how high can you get for a pre-season game?) Panthers QB situation up in the air while Jags go with Mark Brunell and a non-descript lot headed by Jamie Martin, Ted White and Jonathan Quinn.

Panthers will counter with Chris Weinke and other suspects. Jags should be a four-point favorite.

Detroit Lions 20 Cincinnati Bengals 14: Bengals first outing ended in overtime dropping a 16-13 decision to the Chicago Bears. Bengals will improve after that outing still come away with a loss.

Patriots 17 NY Giants 13: Low scoring affair with teams concentrating mostly on defense and using up the entire squad. Pats a small favorite will cover.

Saturday August 11:

Minnesota Vikings 24 Saints 20: Vikings distressed with the loss of Korey Springer will somehow mesh for this meaningless affair. Emotion is on the Vikings side.

Cleveland Browns 20 Green Bay Packers 16: Browns had a spirited scrimmage with the Bills last Saturday and came away from the practice feeling good about themselves. Browns plus anything or pickem is the selection.

Indianapolis Colts 24 Seattle Seahawks 13: Colts are ready for Bear or Fowl, no matter. Colts were on their game scrimmaging versus Tennessee, look for an all out effort for a pre-season game by the Colts. Take Indianapolis minus the points.

Tennessee Titans 26 Chicago Bears 13: Bears were life and death to trip up the Bengals, Titans different animal. QB situation very iffy in Chicago. Take Titans minus the points before the home folks. Sell out crowd anticipated in Tennessee.

Atlanta Falcons 19 NY Jets 16: Flacons with a game under their belt and Michael Vick handling most of the snaps will test New York’s defense. Jets have to be down with the loss of their first round draft pick Santana Moss and their highly spectacular second year man LB John Abraham. Jets favored by a couple, take Atlanta.

Dallas Cowboys 19 Denver Broncos 13: Cowboy rested most of their regulars versus Oakland in their first outing and gave a decent account of themselves. Cowboy regular will play first quarter and part of the second.

Broncos will have much more experimenting to do than Dallas, and Cowboys will try to impress the home folks. Take Dallas plus the points.

San Diego Chargers 24 San Francisco Forty Niners 16: Chargers out to impress the home crowd and try to sell tickets for regular season. Doug Flutie knows only one way to go, and that’s all out. Chargers in a breeze here.

Arizona Cardinals 20 Oakland Raiders 17: Raiders generally sleep walk in the pre-season, look for a shoddy effort by the visitors. Take Cards at any price.
