He went from 40-1 to 12-1 in the futures betting for the Breeders Cup Classic but his backers saw their hopes vanish on Saturday when Congaree injured his right knee while disappointing chalk players in the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.
True to its reputation as the “Graveyard of Favorites,” Saratoga became the “graveyard” of Congaree fans who had bet him down to 2-5 odds in the “prep” for the Travers.
As the stablemate to BC Classic favorite Point Given, the son of Arazi had to play second fiddle to the more illustrious Bob Baffert-trained stakes winner. But there were many who felt that he had the innate talent that would blossom through his three-year-old. That hope faded on Sunday when it was announced that due to the injury Congaree would not race for the remainder of this year.
