NEW ENGLAND TRIBES ANXIOUS FOR GAMING

Aug 26, 2001 8:47 PM

West Warwick, a former textile town in Rhode Island, could be the site for as many as six casinos within a 40-mile radius.

The Narragansett Tribe wants to build a $500 million gambling emporium in a vision of Las Vegas carved from woodlands.

The region's two existing casinos, Foxwoods Resort and Mohegan Sun, both in Connecticut, are among America's largest gambling operations. The Narragansetts have faced State House opposition to gaming for more than a decade, but have been boosted by recent support for gaming in Massachusetts and Louisiana.
