Connecticut state attorney general Richard Blumenthal said he would go to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary to block the federal recognition of some Indian groups.

The Massachusetts-based Nipmucs, who have a financial backer, are rumored to be seeking land in Union, Conn. as well as Sturbridge, Mass. for a possible casino.

Some critics of the Bureau of Indian Affairs have accused the administrators of overturning staff findings that the Nipmucs failed several of the government's seven mandatory criteria for approval.
