California tribes have defied a mandate from Gov. Gray Davis by exceeding the 50,000 figure for operating slot machines across the state.

The alleged violations are outlined in confidential records subpoenaed by State Attorney General Bill Lockyer after the tribes refused to turn over the information.

Copley News Service reported that the cap will like have to be raised to give the state the leverage needed to address other oversights in the hastily negotiated gambling compacts with the tribes.
