New York Knicks basketball coach Jeff Van Gundy unexpectedly announced his resignation Friday night.

Van Gundy cited family reasons for his decision, but had expressed disappointment at his team's play during the season. The Knicks were playing some of their best ball, winning five of their last six games to move above the .500 mark.

Van Gundy posted a 248-172 record and led New York to the NBA Finals in 1999 and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2000.

Assistant Don Chaney will take over the team on an interim basis.
