Bookies’ picks will continue through playoffs

Jan 8, 2002 9:21 AM

Even though the Bookies Battle the Pointspread contest ended with the final NFL regular season game, GamingToday will continue to publish Bookies’ selections during the playoffs through Super Bowl XXXVI.

During the regular season, the consensus picks were 145-102 against the spread (not counting Monday night’s game), for a 58.7% win rate. The contest winner, Rob Akers of The Venetian, was 154-93, a 62.3% win rate.

Throughout the city, sports book directors are gearing up for a busy NFL playoff season.

“Everyone has playoff fever and, what makes it nice, it’s not a given that the two favorites, the Rams and Steelers, will end up in the Super Bowl,” said a sports supervisor at an off-Strip casino. “It’s still early, but we’re getting action from all sides.”

Bookies are keeping up with the action by hanging future odds, prop bets and special parlay cards for the NFL playoff games and the Super Bowl.

At the Palms, the sports book features a generous half-point parlay card for the playoff games, and it intends to offer an expanded prop card that goes beyond the traditional field goals made and interceptions mode.

Speaking of props, Jay Kornegay at the Imperial Palace has promised a boatload of Super Bowl props, a tradition at his sports book for years.

Sid Diamond, the newly-announced sports director at the new Marriott Hotel and Casino in Summerlin (formerly the Regent) has already posted a line on the Super Bowl: He made the NFC —7 with an over/under total of 47.
