Long Island likes sound of No. 1

Jan 15, 2002 8:12 AM

The Long Island Blackbirds have gone where no other blackbirds have gone before.

And, that’s nothing to be proud of.

The school also known as LIU-Brooklyn lost three games last week, including a classic showdown encounter against Fairleigh Dickinson.

FDU had led the Dirty Dozen the first three weeks of the poll until losing a 109-86 decision to LIU. The victory inspired FDU to a second win last week over ninth-ranked Mt. St. Mary’s, 81-61.

Meanwhile, LIU continued to thrive as the nation’s worst team in our poll, falling to St. Francis and Robert Morris by 13 and 19 points respectively.

Robert Morris could not be reached for comment.

Liberty College, the brainchild of noted evangelist Jerry Falwell, claimed the No. 2 spot in the poll with an 0-13 mark, matching LIU. There are still seven winless teams out of 12 in this week’s rankings.

FDU wound up dropping out of the poll with the two wins. Morris Brown leads the nation with 17 losses, which was good enough to move up three spots in the poll. Eastern Kentucky is the one new addition at 0-12, replacing FDU.

North Carolina continues to set new marks for ineptness. The latest in the continuing saga was a 33-point loss to Maryland at College Park. The setback was the largest margin of defeat in the history of the series.

Add that sad fact to the first-ever 0-3 start at the Dean Dome and the worst-ever 22-point home loss to Wake Forest and you have a disaster.

And, UNC hasn’t met Duke!
