Saber's Horse Selections for Sat., March 8, 2008

Mar 9, 2008 6:00 PM

Friday’s Santa Anita results:

Race 3: Our selections finished 1-2-3-4 with the winner No. 7 paying $23, and the $1 trifecta returning $120.

Race 5: Monk won and paid $10.20.

Race 5: A Toast to Tanner won and paid $10.

Race 7: Starry Pursuit won and paid $8.80.

Today we will start off with the big Kentucky Derby prep race at the Fairgrounds in New Orleans, the Louisiana Derby, which will be race No. 9 on the card. Trainer Steve Asmussen appears to have a big edge in this race with a speed horse, No. 4 J Be K, who has run two times and wired the field on both occasions.

He will also have the deep closer and the No. 2 contender for the Kentucky Derby, No. 3 Pyro, who made that explosive move coming from last to first in winning the Risen Star on this oval on Feb 9.

All I can say is if J Be K gets loose on the front end and is able to set some slow fractions he could be long gone before the others know what happened. If he gets some early pressure it will be Pyro storming down the lane for another big win.

I will make a trifecta and super in this race as Pyro will be a short price, but if J Be K would win then we could get a nice payoff. My tri will look like this:

Nos. 3-4 with 3-4-6-8-9 with 3-4-6-8-9. I will then play a 10¢ super using 3-4 with 3-4 with 6-8-9 with all.

I will start off with one of the better bets of the day in what looks like a very tough Saturday card.

Race 3: I think that No. 5 Tripped the Light dropping in class has found a week field that she will be able to handle. I will make a win bet and play an exacta 5 with 1-6-7 and a trifecta 5 with 1-6-7

Race 6: No. 11 Suziqcutie gets a big jockey change in Bejarano and a little shorter distance going from 6 F. to 5½ F. She will get a great stalking trip from her outside post and should storm by them turning for home.

Race 9: This looks like the best bet of the day at Santa Anita – the Santa Anita Oaks. I just love No. 1 Lovely Isle who can turn the tables on No. 7 Golden Doc A, who ran her down late in their last meeting. Also in this race, No. 8 Ariege is improving and is coming into this race sitting on a huge effort; she’s the stable mate of No. 1 Lovely Isle. I think that Lovely Isle will have a pace advantage in this race and will be hard to catch. I will key her on top in the trifecta and exactas and box all three in an exacta and trifecta. Here’s how it will look: $1 trifecta No. 1 with 7-8 with all ($12). Exacta No. 1 with 7-8, and exacta box and tri box 1-7-8.

There are two races today that I like at the Bay: race No. 7, a straight maiden for 3 y.o. and race No. 8, the El Camino Real Derby.

Let’s play some doubles from race No. 7, keying No. 2 El Supremo, who ships in from Santa Anita for trainer Beau Greely, who also has a horse running in the big race. I think he has found a nice soft spot that will pay the shipping bills and this guy looks like a standout in this field with M. Baze in the irons.

In the El Camino, I will use several selections and key a few others. First, I will make $2 doubles keying No. 2 El Supremo with 1-6-7-8-10, and $5 doubles keying No. 2 El Supremo with 7-8

Have a great racing day.
