The first-ever $1 million blackjack tournament will begin a series of satellite tourneys beginning this spring, according to Connie Olsen of Blackjack Confidential Magazine.

Olsen told GamingToday that the Las Vegas Hilton will be host of the mini tournaments, each one offering $64,000 in guaranteed prizes, leading up to the unprecedented championship event, offering $1 million-plus in prizes to just 200 finalists.

Tournament details and the story behind the event are featured in the January-February edition of Blackjack Confidential Magazine.

Olsen said the winner of the championship finals will receive $1 million in cash with odds of 1 chance in 200.

“This is blackjack’s answer to the longtime World Series of Poker,” an annual skill event for poker players at Binion’s Horseshoe, she said.

According to organizers, the $1 million blackjack championship is open to all players, regardless of their skill level or rating as a casino player.

“When I say everyone’s welcome, I mean everyone ... even players who have been barred from playing 21,” said the director of the tournament at the Las Vegas Hilton.

The current issue of Blackjack Confidential Magazine also features details on more than 300 other casino tournaments, including major events in blackjack and other games, from craps to video poker.

Tournaments at the Las Vegas Hilton are among the most popular in Las Vegas. The recently held Blue Suede Shoes Blackjack Tourney attracted a capacity field of contestants, who vied for a prize purse of $25,000.

Based on 156 entries, the payoffs included $10,000 for first place, $5,500 for second, $2,500 for third, $1,200 for fourth and $700 for fifth place. The tournament format featured top scorers advancing over four rounds of play.
