ATS Force is with us

Air Force is probably the weakest link in the Mountain West Conference, but don’t tell that to the Falcons.

The Force is a perfect 7-0 against the spread in the past seven contests and has covered the line facing six different conference teams. Only UNLV has been able to escape the run, with the two rivals slated to meet Feb. 28 at Las Vegas.

The Falcons are ranked No. 12 among the top spread beaters in the nation with a 12-4-1 ATS mark. It matters little to bettors that Air Force is just 3-4 straight-up in those contests. Air Force covered twice against New Mexico including a 50-47 loss as a 14 ½-point underdog at The Pit, one of the nation’s toughest home courts.

The Falcons finish the regular season having to play four of the final six conference games on the road. That hasn’t mattered during the streak, with Air Force going 3-0 ATS away from Colorado Springs.

Southern Cal nosed out Kent State for the No. 1 ranking this week. Both schools own 15-5-1 ATS marks. Little-known Florida International of the Sun Belt Conference is third at 13-3-1.

Rounding out the top five are two more relatively obscure schools, Southern Illinois and Marist. The Salukis of the Missouri Valley Conference are 16-7-1, but most people may remember the school for producing former New York Knicks standout guard Walt “Clyde” Frazier.

Marist, from the Mid Atlantic Athletic Conference, is 14-5-0. More well-known members from that league include Manhattan and Niagara, which produced former NBA star Calvin Murphy.

North Carolina and Purdue continue to hold down the top two places in the Dirty Dozen. The Tar Heels have now lost nine ACC games.
