Plenty of good spots to refuel downtown

There’s always a bargain, good deal, cheap special or freebie going on somewhere in Las Vegas, and this week will start our fruitful search downtown.

For starters, how about a ridiculously low cost, (possibly the cheapest in Las Vegas,) shrimp cocktail? For half a buck, pick one up at the Deli Bar at downtown’s Plaza. Served in a plastic cocktail cup, they look like the popcorn shrimp variety, but come complete with tangy cocktail sauce. Some of the other ones to look for downtown include the famous 99-center at the Golden Gate, (often touted as the “best in Vegas,”) and another 99-er at the Fremont Deli. (The Gate also has a giant size cocktail they sell for $2.99.)

For landlubbers in search of Prime Rib, go for the gold at the Gold Coast. A nicely portioned 10-ounce Prime Rib special is served nightly for $8.95 beginning at 5 p.m. in the Cortez Room. The complete dinner includes a baked potato, hot vegetable, bread and butter and a relish tray. Reservations are accepted by calling 367-7111 after 3 p.m. daily.

Another good, hearty, meat-eaters choice would be to try the Café Sienna at the Suncoast. A whopping, 16-ounce Porterhouse steak dinner special for $9.95 is available 24 hours a day. The giant steak deal also comes complete with all the fixin’s, including a choice of soup or salad, vegetable of the day, choice of potato and even a 15 ounce glass of beer to wash it all down. No reservations are accepted here and guests must be 21 or older for the special.

Silverton is gearing up for their annual “World’s Greatest Yard Sale” to be held on Saturday, April 13. Las Vegas “frugal-ites” will not only enjoy the free admission, but all the good bargains to boot. Here’s your chance to dicker and barter with vendors for the best prices on tons of new and used merchandise, before the unsold items left behind are donated to a needy charity. Gates open to the general public at 7 a.m. on the day of the sale, but if you’d like to register as a seller, call 892-0727, ext. 306, beginning March 29th.

For current cheap show options, it doesn’t get any better than the Fiesta Rancho this Friday, March 29.  In their continuing series, comedian Carol Siskind will perform two free shows at 7 and 9 p.m. with tickets available for the asking at the Amigo slot club booth.

The Tropicana also offers a good deal for Las Vegas locals to see the “funny stuff,” too. Every Thursday is two-for-one night at The Comedy Stop, located inside the hotel. You must show a local ID to receive the “twofers.” Call 739-2714 for more information or show reservations.

Newsflash! Here’s a last minute, honest-to-goodness, too-cheap-to-miss special! Show your Player’s Club card at Silverton on Monday, April 1st, and get a “No Foolin’” Champagne Brunch for a measly buck!  Hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Until next week”¦Eat well, play well, stay well!
