MAINE RELIGIOUSLY STUDIES GAMING BILL

Apr 4, 2002 10:50 PM

Can gaming and God get along? The state of Maine has dared to take that path.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Republican Sen. Mary Small attached an amendment to a gaming bill that would put a conservative Christian spokesman on the panel.

"This amendment makes it better than it was," said Gary Heath of the Christian Civic League.

The amended bill is tied up in litigation between the House and Senate, with a vote scheduled at an unknown date to either accept or reject Small's request.

Maine has been pursuing gambling to gain some of the revenues enjoyed by the Connecticut casinos in New England.
