James, born James Oppenheim, studied clarinet and saxophone, earned a history degree from UCLA and joined Morris Day’s band as a keyboardist after graduation. Eventually, he played sax with the band after he convinced Day to allow him to do so. James became an in-demand performer on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone and the flute. Randy Crawford, with whom James toured, gave him the nickname Boney. The name stuck and success followed.

Since 1992, James has recorded eight chart-topping records and he has earned a Soul Train Music Award, a number one record on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, two top 20 urban adult contemporary singles, and a Record of the Year from The Gavin Report, a jazz industry publication. The sax player believes his success emanates from the soulful quality of his music, and he has been called a “funky firebird” who elicits “mid-set standing ovations.”
