NTRA christens first Breeders’ future bets

Jul 9, 2002 10:02 AM

Trying to duplicate the success of the Kentucky Derby Futures betting, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) last weekend kicked off the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Future Bet.

Similar to the Derby futures pool, the Breeders’ Cup pari-mutuel futures pool featured betting on 23 horses and the field in select races in the Breeders’ Cup, which will be held at Arlington Park, October 26.

Early returns weren’t encouraging.

Starting Thursday, July 4, and continuing through Sunday afternoon, bettors ponied up $85,919 in the $4 Million Breeders’ Classic Pool, $39,732 in the $2 Million Breeders’ Cup Distaff pool, and $48,193 on the $1 Million Breeders’ Cup Spring pool.

As a comparison, this year’s Kentucky Derby future pool generated $1.5 million in three separate pools. In its first year of operation (1999), the Derby future pool amassed $676,000 in wagers.

Street Cry, winner of the Dubai World Cup, was the morning line favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at 6-1 odds, and finished the weekend as the actual favorite at 4-1. War Emblem, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, finished the betting at 12-1. The ever-popular field bet closed at 6-1.

The Future Bet is a special wager that challenges fans to select in advance the winners of Oct. 26 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships races.

"We’re looking at very competitive, wide open fields for these races offering lucrative opportunities for fans to get involved with the Championships," said Ken Kirchner, NTRA senior vice president of product development. "With horses like Buddha (15-1), Sunday Break (50-1), Macho Uno (8-1) in the Classic; Forest Secrets (70-1), Chamrousse (70-1), You (13-1) in the Distaff; and, Aldebaran (21-1), Gygistar (22-1), and Left Bank (10-1) in the Sprint, there is tremendous value on the board for the players."

Other future bet pools leading up to the Breeders’ Cup championship include:

”¡ August 9-11: Breeders’ Cup Turf, Breeders’ Cup Mile and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

”¡ August 30-September 2: Breeders’ Cup Classic, Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Pool II)

”¡ September 20-22: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

Under Breeders’ Cup Future Bet rules, each race will offer pari-mutuel groupings of 23 runners plus one field entry consisting of all horses not in the body of 23 for each respective race. All betting, available at Nevada casinos and racetracks nationwide, will be win-only with a minimum wager amount of $2.

No refunds are made on horses that do not ultimately compete in their designated races. Arlington Park, which is this year’s Breeders’ Cup host track, will serve as the processing hub for all wagers.

The wager will be hubbed at Arlington Park, which will also provide a separate satellite feed with a continuous update of the pari-mutuel odds to all simulcast locations for presentation to racing fans at those sites.

The special internet link will also be established displaying the pari-mutuel odds for all three races at ntra.com.
