With Madness Comes Plaza Props

Mike Colbert, the Plaza’s sports book guru (we love Lou D’Amico too), came up with a few NCAA prop bets to whet the appetite from the standard lines and totals.

For instance, will any of the four No. 1 seeds reach the Final Four? The odds are: UNC (Yes -120, No EVEN); UCLA (Yes -110, No -110); Memphis (Yes +160, No -180); Kansas (Yes +120, No -140).

Which teams will get further? Vanderbilt +120 vs Xavier -140; Drake EVEN vs Marquette -120; Oklahoma +105 vs. USC -125 and Pittsburgh +140 vs Louisville -160. Want more?

Will a 14 seed beat a 3 in the first round? Yes -125, No +105. Will a 12 beat a 5? Yes -280, No. +240. Will UCLA win the title? Yes +450, No -280. Nice work guys.

Beneath Pac Man Comes Mares

The hype went to the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight, and rightly so, but the undercard produced a likely champ in bantamweight Abner Mares.

The latest in a long line of outstanding Mexican fighters improved to 16-0 with a second round KO of Diosdado Gabi. The outcome was pretty much decided before the fight when Gabi gained 13 pounds in the 24 hours following the weigh-in. Nevertheless, Mares is a cult hero in Mexico and sure to be seen again in Vegas. As for Pacquiao, he closed in the books from -200 to -210. Marquez, though, is one tough hombre.

And to support GT’s Monti Rock (SlotsToday, page 6), the fight media at Mandalay Bay devoured the food at first site. Monti is so right. The media are vultures. – Mark Mayer
