At last, the NFL season is about to begin and the colleges are in full swing. I love it.
Friday, Sept. 6
Hawaii (+ pts) at BYU: The second game for both teams. That’s more of an advantage for the visiting Rainbows, who are coming off a cupcake opener with Eastern Illinois.
Saturday, Sept. 7
TCU over N’western: The Frogs return 48 players, including 16 starters. The TCU defense was 10th in the nation last year in stopping the run. Northwestern has been on the downslide. Coaching staff fighting too many distractions.
Pitt + under vs Texas A&M: This should be a whale of a matchup. Both teams on the rise. Walt Harris is one of the bright young coaches in the game and we have had our issues with A&M’s R.C. Slocum and his boring offense.
Michigan State (-pts) vs Rice: The Owls find out that playing the Spartans in East Lansing is a whole lot different than facing Houston.
UNLV (-pts) vs Kansas: The Rebels will find Kansas to their liking after facing a tougher Wisconsin team in the home opener. Kansas will have enough problems staying away from The Strip. Of course, there may not be a lot left of the Jayhawks after playing Iowa State.
Ohio State (-pts) over Kent: If Kent fans are smoking before the game, they won’t be after it’s over. Buckeyes can name the score in this total mismatch.
Others we like: Notre Dame, Oklahoma, UCLA, California, West Virginia.
Sunday, Sept. 8
Broncos +pts over Rams: Everyone likes the Rams, which is one reason we love the Broncos. Portis is going to make a big impression at runningback for Denver. St. Louis is over-rated in terms of depth.
Cowboys —pts over Texans: Simply put, this is a game Dallas can’t afford to lose. This would be a dagger in the Cowboys season after just Game 1. This will be a fun game to watch, though.
Cards/Redskins OVER: This is a big game for both team. Arizona has never been known for strong starts and desperately wants to change that trend. Spurrier gets another opportunity to stick it to the NFL on offense.
Titans (-1 ½) over Eagles: We think a generous line considering the game is in Nashville, where the Titans rarely lose. Eddie George looks fresh and McNair will enjoy the challenge of facing Donovan McNabb. Tough opener for Eagles.
Saints (+6) at Bucs: The Tampa Bay offense under Gruden looks just like it did under Dunge. Deuce McAllister has the good to be a great Fantasy find for people who enjoy that livelihood. Us bettors will settle for the 6 and the money.
Patriots (pk) vs Steelers: New England is not getting the proper respect as Super Bowl champs. Cowher and the Steelers are awesome on Mondays, but we like Brady over Kordell with the game on the line. And for kicks, Vinatieri is on our side.
