The NFL begins with a couple of stellar matchups pairing St. Louis and Denver, along with Pittsburgh-New England on Monday night.

Thursday, Sept. 5

49ers 26, Giants 20: On paper game looks like a lock for Niners. However, early season contests can be deceiving. Both teams looked past preseason. Niners —2.

Sunday, Sept. 8

Titans 24, Eagles 20: Can’t go overboard on Philadelphia yet. Ditto for Titans. McNabb and McNair will put the ball in the air. Favor Titans as pick.

Jets 27, Bills 17: Could be make or break season for Jets. Bills unveil ex-Patriots QB Bledsoe. Jets play better on the road. Take Jets.

Skins 20, Cards 7: Don’t buy into Spurrier’s offense until it shows up in regular season. Arizona defense in doldrums. Hate to lay seven with Redskins, but don’t want Cards. Favor Redskins.

Ravens 13, Panthers 9: Don’t know where the touchdowns come from. Under looks strong. Favor Ravens —2, Under 32 ½.

Bears 20, Vikings 13: Vikes will abandon the offense in early part of season. Pass receiving corps limited right now. Bears rise in 2001 leads to more of the same this year. Bears —4 ½.

Bengals 23, Chargers 16: Not sold on Drew Brees being the San Diego QB. Bengals a team on the rise, but could use a QB besides Frerotte. Bengals depend on Corey Dillon running and D. Favor Bengals —1½.

Chiefs 27, Browns 20: Both teams upbeat and will score. Last team with ball wins. Browns QB Couch shaky right now, but will play. Favor Chiefs +3.

Packers 31, Falcons 27: High scoring free-for-all. Passes fill the air. Running game absent. QBs Michael Vick and Brett Favre will have field days. Take Falcons +7½.

Colts 31, Jaguars 24: Talk is that Colts defense is improved. The Jags offense is no bargain, however. Colts can put the points on the board. Take Over and Colts —4.

Dolphins 24, Lions 13: Detroit QB situation intriguing, but unsettled. Dolphins over-rated, but tough at home in early-going. Laying 8 is no bargain. Scary vote for Miami.

Broncos 27, Rams 24: St. Louis will find playing in Denver can be trying. Broncos relish playing at home. Favor Broncos —3.

Raiders 27, Seahawks 10: Oakland’s over-age destroyers have to win early. Raiders another team media has over-rated. Seattle’s QB situation, though, is poor. Lean to Raiders —7.

Cowboys 20, Texans 7: Not sold on Texans winning four games. More like two. Cowboys picked in some quarters to make playoffs. Take Cowboys —7.

Bucs 24, Saints 20: Gruden may be a genius, but is coaching and not playing. Points are the influence here. Take Saints +7

Monday, Sept. 9.

Steelers 24, Pats 20: Hard to believe Super Bowl champs at home would be an underdog. Feeling is Steelers will be favored by game time. Should be low scoring. Favor Steelers +1.
