“Westin” will trump “Maxim” as new owners take over the shuttered Flamingo Road hotel-casino.

The upscale hotel brand is among several changes pending at the 800-room resort, says the new owner, Columbia Sussex Corp. The Fort Mitchell, Ky.-based hotelier paid $38 million for the privilege of spiffing up the 23-year-old up property just east of the Strip.

Columbia Sussex, which holds about 50 hotel franchises nationwide, including the Horizon hotel-casino at Lake Tahoe, said it will bring in a management company to operate the casino. At this point, there are no plans to expand the modestly sized gaming area.

But other renovations are on the drawing board, including a facelift of the hotel’s glass façade. Joe Young, Columbia Sussex’s director of development, said the rehab should take about nine months.

Reopening could be as early as next year.
