Saber's Horse Selections for Fri., March 21, 2008

Yesterday’s results

We hit the early double for $5 at Santa Anita and it paid a real nice $84 for a two dollar wager. The pick six paid $702,754.60, but we could only come up with four out of the six winners and our last race single ran up the track. At Bay Meadows we hit seven out of the eight races with four singles winning, but we only caught the early Pick 4 on a $4 ticket.

Santa Anita

Race 1

It looks like 2yo master trainer Wesley Ward has two fast ones once again with No. 5, Bring thee Money, and No. 6, Dicey Riley. The only threat could be No. 7, Cat Dreamer, who also looks fast for trainer Kitchingman, who can along with Pedroza pop with a 2yo. We will play some early doubles and an exacta and tri box. Box 5-6-7 in exactas and trifectas and use all three in the early doubles. By the way, Wesley Ward has now won with seven of his last 11 2-year-olds at this distance at this meet the last two years.

Race 2

We’ll use three in this race: No. 1, Thornmark, who ran a good race in his only one, and now is raised a tad in claiming price; if he’s able to improve off his last he can win; No. 5, All Money No Love, also ran well in his sole start and gets a great post for this 6½ furlong race; No. 6, Carman, has had his shots and ran well enough to win but just can’t seem to get there. He has finished in the money six out of his seven lifetime races. Selections: 1-5-6

Try these $5 doubles:

Race 1: 5-6-7 Race 1: 5-6

Race 2: 1-5-6 Race 2: 5-6

Race 4

This looks like a two horse race with No. 1, Gold Trim, who drops back to $25k, which looks like a good move for Hollendorfer as he claimed this one for $20k and has won two out of three. The No. 4, Behind the Screen, gets his second start for trainer Mike Mitchell who is not afraid to drop and win … and that is exactly what he’s doing here for super owner Bob Bone. I will make an exacta box and key both in a Pick 3. Selections: 1-4

Race 5

This appears like a three horse race with No. 4, Apoplectic, who just missed at this distance in his last for unlucky trainer Zucker, who has had eight out of his 23 starters finish second – his luck is due to change. No. 6, Tulips Dandy, is a second time starter for R. Mandella, who had a ton of trouble in his first try and can only improve off that effort. No. 7, Two Tone Roan, is back with Cal Breds and will be the one to run down in the stretch. Selections: 4-6-7

Race 6

No. 1, Lady Disdain, is back at the $10k claiming price and the flat mile distance of her last win, she also gets a great post for this race and is the one to beat. No. 5, Blushing Bear Cat, drops into an action spot for trainer Spawr and Migliore will have this fillie charging late. No. 11, La Chola, draws in from the also list and could be the one to run down. Selections: 1-5-11

Try a $1 pick three for a total cost of $18:

Race 4: 1-4

Race 5: 4-6-7

Race 6: 1-5-11

Race 7

Since the eighth race looks like an "all bet" I will stop here and play a trifecta using No. 2, Lit'sgoodlokngray, and No. 7, Skimmetry, who both exit a highly rated race on this course Feb 21 when Skim ran second and Gray ran third. I look for both of them to be on the wire once again. I will use the 3-4-8 behind them in the second and third hole.

$1 trifecta (total cost $6): 2-7 with 2-7 with 3-4-8

$1 trifecta (total cost $6): 2-7 with 3-4-8 with 2-7

Race 8

Just in case you are flush after the early races and want to stay in action, here are my "leans" in this race. No. 1, Going Places, has speed from the rail and drops from a straight maiden to $32k maiden claimer for his 3 yo debut. No. 3, Okie Dokie Petey, will be the chalk but has failed in his last two as the favorite. No. 5, Fabulous Mike, could rebound from his dismal performance in his last start and is 10-1 in the morning line. No. 8, Carters Cash, is a first time starter out of a sneaky barn. No. 9, Sword Legend, gets Gomez and may get the best trip. Selections: 1-3-5-8-9

Short fields abound once again and the races look chalky, so we’ll just take a shot at the late pick three.

Race 6

No. 3, Evening Fire, won here at this distance two years ago, so maybe it’s time for her to get that elusive third score. No. 6, In Other Words, gets Baze riding for S. Sherman. No. 7, Julies Flying Now, gets her first start for Hollendorfer off the claim and it’s seldom a 9yo gets claimed – Jerry must know something! Selections: 4-6-7

Race 7

No. 4, Drewthegentleman, shipped in from Santa Anita for this feature race and lands the hot Alvarado in the irons. No. 6, Bamaha Breeze, is undefeated at three different tracks and is the one to beat. No. 7, Dawns Day, shipped in on March 8 and broke his maiden in a fast time and could move forward once again. Selections: 4-6-7

Race 8

No. 4, Lake Havens, may not have liked the wet going in his first start on this track and should run better on dry land. No. 7, Megamigo, also got caught in the slop in his last and will run much better today at this shorter distance and dry surface. After that it could be any of the others.

$1 Pick 3 ($21 total):

Race 6: 4-6-7

Race 7: 6

Race 8: all in this race

$1 Pick 3 ($18 total):

Race 6: 4-6-7

Race 7: 4-6-7

Race 8: 4-7

Good luck and check for late scratches/changes.
