Ameristar Casinos Inc. (ASCA) has become Missouri’s shining star among its riverboat gaming companies.
For the third straight month, Ameristar boats in both Kansas City and St. Louis out-produced the competing operations owned by Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. (HET), and other smaller companies.
Providing the impetus for the improved results are the renovations the company made at its complex in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles and a new parking garage in Kansas City. The improved results first showed up in August and was followed by increases both in September and in October.
State officials noted that before Ameristar unveiled its property improvement, Harrah’s dominated the two principal markets with a 38.3% market share. At that time, Ameristar followed with 30.4%. However, in the past three months, Ameristar’s market share has increased to an estimated 37% while Harrah’s numbers have dropped to about 35%.
That the two companies dominate the riverboat gaming markets in Missouri can be easily found in the numbers that show that Harrah’s and Ameristar account for 68 cents for every dollar taken in by all the gaming operations in the state.
