49ers should kick Cortez

Drew Brees arrived as a top-notch NFL quarterback the same time Jose Garcia departed as a dependable field goal kicker.

Brees led a gallant fourth-quarter comeback in San Diego’s 20-17 overtime win over San Francisco. The victory was aided by Garcia’s miss in overtime and some very questionable 49ers coaching decisions.

San Francisco failed to use its times out properly both in regulation and in overtime, which the opportunistic Chargers seized upon.

The Oakland Raiders gained some measure of revenge for last year's snowjob at New England with a 27-20 win over the defending super bowl champ as a five-point favorite.

The Raiders-Patriots game was one of four that saw line movements of at least one-point from the opening number.

Bettors were 3-1 against the house, the lone setback coming in Atlanta where the Falcons slid from a 3 to 1½ point favorite in defeating New Orleans, 24-17.

This week's early top play should be in Seattle, where the struggling Seahawks host Kansas City. The Chiefs, 5-0 ATS on the road, opened an early 3-point favorite.

Another live play could be Buffalo visiting the suddenly streaking Jets at the Meadowlands. The Bills are 4-0 ATS including Sunday's 17-16 loss at Kansas City. The Jets are 3-0 both SU and ATS in November.

In college football, the house again took its share of hits, losing 6-of-10 games with line moves of 2½ points or more.
