Steven Wright returns to Orleans

Feb 3, 2003 4:03 AM

The reigning king of one-liners, Steven Wright, returns to the Orleans Showroom, Thursday-Sunday. Tickets are $34.95.

The winner of an Academy Award, Wright is a prototype comedian that others often emulate. One of four children, he was raised in Burlington, Mass.

After graduating and holding a slew of jobs, Wright became a regular performer at Ding Ho’s Comedy Club and Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge, Mass.

In August of 1982, Wright got his big break and made his first appearance on The Tonight Show. The king of late-night comedy, Johnny Carson, enjoyed his sets so much that he invited him back within a week.

Soon, Wright found himself on shows such as Saturday Night Live, Late Night With David Letterman and numerous trips back to the Tonight Show.

In 1986, Wright’s debut album, I Have A Pony, earned him a Grammy nomination. In 1988 he starred in his first HBO special, On Location: Steven Wright.

In 1989, he was honored with an Academy Award for Best Short Film, The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, in which he starred and co-wrote.

One year later he starred in his second stand-up special for HBO, Wicker Chairs and Gravity.

Wright’s films include Desperately Seeking Susan, So I Married An Axe Murderer, Natural Born Killers and Mixed Nuts.

He also starred with John Cleese and Jack Palance in the animated film, The Swan Princess as the voice of Speed, the turtle.
