More ‘ways’ to win big

Feb 11, 2003 2:11 AM

Though there are many ways to play a Keno ticket it is clear that some ways are better than others. I mentioned last week in the discussion of 5-way nines that in general the best way tickets have more rather than fewer spots, and that you are better off playing way tickets that consist of groups roughly half the desired way. In the case of the eight spot that implies that the best way 8 spot consists largely of groups of four.

The below tickets are all 45-way eight spots. Most of you are familiar with the classic ticket composed of 10 groups of four, even if you have never played it; it is both simple to understand and simple to check for winners. As you can see below it is also simply the best to play.

How can this be? How can four tickets playing the same ways and costing the same have such widely differing frequencies of win? It is true that you can't alter the house percentage of a ticket simply by playing it as a way and indeed all the above tickets have the same house percentage. What is also true is that the classic version wins more often than any other, and almost twice as often as the field ticket. The field ticket, in turn, though it pays less often, tends to pay higher amounts, as it is much more likely to produce multiple way winners than the others.

Why then say that the classic ticket is better, since the percentages are the same? It is because in the real world our bankrolls are limited, and by playing the higher frequency tickets we afford ourselves a higher chance of winning the big one before we go broke. It's simple!

Well that's it for this week. Good Luck! I'll see you in line.
