by Ed Golden | Leading Triple Crown candidate Georgie Boy was declared out of Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby and the May 3 Kentucky Derby when trainer Kathy Walsh announced that the gelded son of Tribal Rule had a pulled muscle in his back.
"It’s high on his back end and we don’t know how long it will take (to heal), but we’re not going to take a chance," Walsh said. "I don’t know how long he will be out, but we will give the horse all the time he needs and let him tell us when to come back. Obviously the Santa Anita Derby is out and I wouldn’t want to run him in the Kentucky Derby without a prep race. Maybe we will see him in the Pacific Classic (at Del Mar in August)."
Georgie Boy is unbeaten as a 3-year-old winning the Grade II San Vicente Stakes at 7 furlongs on Feb. 10 and the Grade II San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 15, his first race around two turns.
Overall, Georgie Boy has a 4-2-1 record from seven starts with earnings of $496,806. He won the Grade I Del Mar Futurity last September.
