Downs outweigh ups for Derby

There were more downs than ups especially with the highly touted Atswhatimtalknbout, who finished a lackluster fourth in the Santa Anita Derby.

The winner, Buddy Gil, will be Mr BG now as he continues to gain respect. Buddy ran his heart out in a slow time to beat longshot Indian Express in a thrilling stretch drive. There will be no KD winner coming from this bunch. As for Talknbout, trainer Ron Ellis will ship to Churchill and hope for the best.

One up and coming star, Dynever crushed an average field in the Aventura Stakes, but is probably pointing to the Lone Star Derby on May 10th. Look for this guy to develop into a top grass horse.

One bright spot was Ten Most Wanted, who won big in the Illinois Derby. This was only his second career win and don’t think it can carry him to the roses. Derby winner most likely shows up this week in the Wood or the Blue Grass Stakes.

The Wood will feature Derby favorite Empire Maker against several hopefuls, including New York Hero. Empire Maker looks much the best.

At the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes we will see the rematch between Peace Rules and Badge Of Silver. Add in up and comer Brancusi, Offlee Wild and Region Of Merit and there’s a shot at nice payoff. Peace Rules just worked on Monday and scorched in 1:113/5. I am taking my shot with Brancusi at a good price.

This Saturday at the Arkansas Derby we doubt Man Among Men or Ten Cents A Shine will see the winners circle on the first Saturday in May. Keep an eye on Midas Eyes who worked with Empire Maker on Monday. Frankel’s third horse is not looking Derby, but should go April 19 in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes.
